Outcome Steps Initially, our two primary outcomes were knee pain after exercise and the Lysholm knee score at 12 months after surgery. Knee discomfort was assessed on an 11-point scale ranging from 0 to 10 . The Lysholm knee score is a validated,14 condition-specific outcome measure.15 Following the Western Ontario Meniscal Evaluation Tool ,16 a meniscus-specific health-related quality-of-lifestyle instrument, was validated for individuals with a degenerative meniscal tear,17 this measure was added as our third primary outcome .Throughout twenty years of follow-up in the CARDIA research, the cumulative incidence of heart failing among blacks who acquired hypertension at baseline was 5.6 percent, in comparison with 0.8 percent among those who did not possess hypertension at baseline. Most of the individuals with hypertension at baseline were not getting antihypertensive treatment. A trial of antihypertensive therapy in old participants, including blacks, showed that diuretic therapy, in particular, was associated with significant reductions in the risk of heart failure.46 Thus, although treatment for hypertension and reduced amount of the chance of heart failure possess not been studied in this age group, our data suggest that the true number of young, black individuals with hypertension that could need to be treated to prevent one case of heart failure before 50 years could be only 21.
